Is CBD Good for Sleep?
CBD may support sleep for many people, particularly those whose sleep difficulty is driven by anxiety or stress. Research on CBD and sleep is growing and generally positive, though it is not yet as well-established as research on some pharmaceutical sleep aids.
CBD works on sleep primarily through indirect pathways. It does not produce sedation the way THC or pharmaceutical sleep aids do. Instead, it interacts with the endocannabinoid system and serotonin receptors in ways that reduce anxiety, lower cortisol, and promote relaxation, all of which support better sleep onset. A 2019 case series in The Permanente Journal found that 66% of patients showed improved sleep scores within the first month of CBD use at 25mg daily. A 2017 review in Current Psychiatry Reports found CBD may have therapeutic potential for insomnia, REM sleep behavior disorder, and excessive daytime sleepiness.
CBD works best for sleep difficulty that has an anxiety or stress component. People who lie awake with racing thoughts, difficulty turning off mental activity, or heightened physical tension report the most consistent results. For sleep difficulty driven by pain, a topical and systemic CBD combination addresses both. For sleep difficulty with no apparent anxiety or stress component, CBD alone may produce modest effects. The evidence supports CBD as a useful tool for sleep, not a guaranteed solution, and individual response varies significantly.
