A 2012 analysis in Drug Testing and Analysis examined 28 major compounds across cannabis varieties and found that the popular Sativa-vs-Indica distinction doesn’t reliably predict chemical content (Hazekamp & Fischedick, 2012, PubMed PMID 22362625). What actually differentiates strains is the full chemovar profile: the specific ratios of cannabinoids, terpenes, and minor compounds working together. How To Choose Your Strain
Start by picking a goal. The nine strains split into three families with distinct effect personalities. Indica strains skew toward evening, body relaxation, and wind-down sessions. Sativa strains run brighter: daytime, energy, mental engagement. Hybrid strains sit in the middle and work any time of day, which makes them the most flexible pick.
Once you’ve picked a family, look at the specific strain personalities. Yes. Drug tests look for THC metabolites without distinguishing source, so smoking or vaporizing THCa flower can absolutely cause a positive result on a workplace, sports, custody, or any other drug screening. If you have any drug test obligation, abstain from any THC product entirely (THCa, Delta 8, Delta 9, all forms). The detection window can extend from days to several weeks after the last dose, depending on body fat, hydration, frequency of use, and the sensitivity of the test. Hair tests can detect THC metabolites for 90 days or longer. This applies regardless of state legality or product source. Don’t risk it.
Don’t combine THCa flower with alcohol, prescription sleep aids, benzodiazepines, opioids, or other central nervous system depressants. The combined effect is substantially stronger and increases impairment risk. If you take SSRIs, blood thinners, anti-seizure medications, or any medication with a narrow therapeutic window, talk to your healthcare provider before using cannabis products.
