Is CBD or THC Better for Arthritis Pain?
CBD and THC target arthritis pain through different mechanisms, and most arthritis patients find the combination more effective than either alone. CBD addresses joint inflammation through CB2 receptors. THC reduces pain signal intensity through CB1 receptors. They are complementary, not competing options.
The distinction matters because arthritis pain has two components: the inflammatory process damaging joint tissue, and the pain signals that process generates. CBD, through CB2 receptor modulation in joint and immune tissue, is more directly relevant to the inflammatory component. THC, through CB1 receptors in the pain signaling pathway, is more directly relevant to the intensity of pain perception. A patient taking only CBD may get meaningful inflammation reduction but incomplete pain relief. A patient taking only THC may get good pain relief without slowing the underlying inflammatory process.
For arthritis patients who prefer to avoid intoxication, CBD-only products can produce meaningful results, particularly for inflammation management. For those open to THC, a balanced 1:1 or 1:1:1 (THC:CBD:CBG) formula addresses both pathways simultaneously. The addition of CBG in some formulas may provide additional anti-inflammatory support through PPAR-gamma receptor interaction. Delta-8 THC is an option for those who want THC’s analgesic properties at a milder potency than Delta-9.
