Is Northern Lights indica or sativa?

Northern Lights is an indica, and one of the plants the whole category is defined against.

It arrived in the 1980s and became the reference point almost straight away. When people describe a strain as classic indica, what they usually mean is that it behaves like this one: quiet in the head, heavy in the body, and pointed squarely at the last hours of a day.

It’s also gentler than most of the modern indicas it went on to inspire. That combination, unambiguous direction with a soft landing, is why it has stayed on menus for forty years while harder strains came and went.

The mental part comes first and it works by subtraction. Thoughts get fewer and less urgent, and the effect people describe most often is that whatever they were turning over stops needing to be turned over. It isn’t dreamy or strange, it’s just quieter.

The body follows within ten or fifteen minutes and it’s comfortable, never crushing. Muscles let go, the chair improves, and the phrase that fits is comfortable laziness. It doesn’t pin you down the way the heaviest modern indicas do, and that’s the difference people notice.

That moderation is the whole appeal. Plenty of strains will end your evening more decisively. Very few will settle you this reliably while leaving you able to get up, make food and hold a conversation. That’s the trade this one makes and it’s a good one.

It fades slowly and without a drop.

Good for: the last few hours of an evening, films, music, quiet company, and anyone who wants an indica that doesn’t take the night hostage. Bad for: mornings, focus, and anything you have to finish.

What Northern Lights tastes and smells like

Northern Lights tastes like sweet lemon and pine, with something spicy underneath.

It’s an old-fashioned flavor and that’s meant as a compliment, because nothing here is chasing a trend. There’s a clean sweetness up front, a resinous pine behind it, and a dry warmth at the back that reads closer to spice than to pepper. Nothing about it is engineered toward dessert.

The citrus is soft, never sharp, which distinguishes it from the lemon-forward sativas that share the note. Here it sits inside the pine instead of on top of it, and the overall impression is of a plant, not a flavor.

If your usual picks are candy, cream or fruit, this will read as plain by comparison. If you have been finding modern strains overly sweet, this is where that ends.

How strong is Northern Lights?

Northern Lights is moderate, and deliberately so.

Northern Lights flower usually tests somewhere between 16 and 21% THC, which is modest by current standards and entirely in keeping with the strain. It has never been the strongest thing on a shelf, and its survival has nothing to do with potency.

We carry it across an unusually wide range, from a 1:1 that pairs CBD evenly with THC through to Delta 8 THC and a CBD-only option. That spread is the real answer to how strong it is, because you’re choosing: the 1:1 is noticeably softened, the Delta 8 THC sits in the middle, and the CBD version is essentially flavor and calm.

The vapes run 70 to 95% total cannabinoids, which describes concentration, never force. A cartridge percentage isn’t comparable to a flower percentage in any way that helps you.

The strain, not the aurora

Northern Lights the strain has nothing to do with the aurora, and most people typing these two words are looking at the sky.

The aurora borealis is one of the most searched phrases on the internet, and this plant borrowed the name, so plenty of people land on pages like this one having meant something else entirely. If that’s you: this is a cannabis strain, and none of it will help you plan a trip to Iceland.

The name came from the way the plant looks late in flowering, when the resin catches light and the purple and green shift against each other. It was a fair description and a good piece of marketing, and it’s caused mild confusion ever since.

If you did mean the strain, the shorthand is that Northern Lights is the classic evening indica: quiet head, loose body, moderate strength, and one of the most reliable things on any menu.

Northern Lights sits at the lighter end of our indicas, with Granddaddy Purp in the middle and Ice Cream Cake heaviest of the three.

Granddaddy Purp is the more eventful one. Grape where this one is pine, and the first stretch is dreamy and floaty before the body catches up, where Northern Lights goes quietly to work. Take the Granddaddy Purp when you want the wind-down to be interesting, and take this one when you just want to be settled.

Ice Cream Cake is the heaviest of the three and the sweetest. Vanilla and cream, and considerably more physical. Take the Ice Cream Cake when the point is to be finished for the night. Take the Northern Lights when you still want to be a person for another hour.

Where Northern Lights comes from

Northern Lights traces back to Afghan and Thai landraces, crossed in the American northwest and refined in the Netherlands during the 1980s.

The Afghan side is the body and most of the resin. Afghan landraces are short, dense and heavy, and nearly every classic indica on a modern menu owes them something. The Thai side brought the sweetness and a little of the lift, which is why this settles you without flattening you.

What made it matter historically was reliability. It grew consistently, finished predictably and passed those traits on, which is why it turns up in the background of an enormous number of later strains. A lot of the indicas you’ve tried are partly this.

What made it valuable to growers matters to you for the same reason: what arrives under this name is unusually consistent. There are fewer versions of it in circulation than of most famous strains.

What is Northern Lights good for?

Northern Lights is for ending an evening without ending it abruptly.

This is the indica for people who want to be settled, not switched off. It’s genuinely good at the last few hours of a day: quiet enough to stop the churn, gentle enough that you can still eat, talk and follow a film, and moderate enough that you’re not committing the whole night to it.

It also suits being physically worn out, the stiff, heavy sort of tired that follows a long day on your feet or a hard session at the gym, where the loosening is the point and not something you put up with.

And it’s one of the easier strains to start with. The moderate strength, the wide comfortable middle and the soft fade make it forgiving in a way most indicas aren’t.

Where it’s the wrong pick: any morning, anything that needs finishing, and anyone chasing intensity. There are heavier things on our menu and this one isn’t trying to be one of them.
